With 13 years under our belt in Sydney and five in London, Re opened its doors in Melbourne in 2022. But as a new agency, who did we know there? Who would we hire? How would we find work?? We needed to get our name out there with the Melbourne design community, potential clients and brand enthusiasts at large. We needed to do something that was fun and memorable to show Melbourne just how smart, passionate and engaged in our industry we are.
Enter Would You Rather – a simple concept that enabled us to explore some of the big issues in design in a way that was super easy for people to engage with. We co-opted the well known game and formulated questions that forced designers to show where they sit on some of the topics that are dominating our industry right now. Questions like: Would you rather embrace all AI design tools unquestioningly, or destroy them forever? And: Would you rather design awards were judged by experts, or by the public?
Process
We created a microsite that guided people through twenty carefully selected questions. On completing the quiz, users could see where they sat in relation to the broader design community. We then took Would You Rather to the stage for an interactive panel discussion. Our panelists spanned multiple design specialisms from graphic to motion, fashion and game design, meaning the discussion was interesting and multifaceted, and a diverse section of the community was represented. Thanks to colour-coded voting cards, the audience was able to weigh in on every question, creating a boisterous and engaging discussion for all.
Our online quiz was taken over 1000 times. Our event, which was hosted as part of Melbourne Design Week, boasted a sold out crowd of 80 people. But most importantly we discussed the issues that matter to us with new friends in the design community and potential clients, so that people got a strong sense of who we are as an agency and how we think.
